RecoverCare operated as a distributor of medical equipment, focusing on products for wound care, bariatric patients, and safe patient handling. The company was founded in 1992 and was formerly known as Decubiti Concepts. Its business model centered on providing rental equipment and solutions to a wide range of healthcare facilities, including acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers, and hospices.

In a significant strategic move, RecoverCare completed a merger-of-equals transaction with Joerns Healthcare, LLC in May 2014. At the time of the merger, RecoverCare was controlled by the investment firm Aurora Capital Group in partnership with Moelis Capital Partners, while Joerns was controlled by Quad-C Management. The combination was designed to create a comprehensive healthcare equipment provider by merging Joerns' manufacturing and distribution strengths with RecoverCare's extensive rental platform and service footprint, which included over 100 service centers nationwide. The integration of the two companies continued, and in February 2016, the company name was officially changed to Joerns Healthcare, discontinuing the RecoverCare brand to present a single, unified identity to the market. This rebranding was a strategic step to finalize the merger and move forward as one organization. The legacy of RecoverCare now resides within Joerns Healthcare, which continues to manufacture and distribute patient handling and wound care products. In November 2023, Joerns Healthcare announced a strategic shift to exit the long-term care rental business, a core part of RecoverCare's original model, to refocus on direct medical equipment sales and services, citing a market shift towards asset ownership by healthcare providers.

Separately, a different entity named Recover Care, founded in 2016 by Zish Margulies and Nathan Freund, operates skilled nursing facilities, primarily in Kansas. This company is distinct from the historical equipment distributor, RecoverCare.
