Recast.AI was a French artificial intelligence startup established in September 2015 by co-founders Patrick Joubert, Jasmine Anteunis, Paul Renvoisé, and Julien Blancher. The founding team brought together a mix of serial entrepreneurship and technical skill; Joubert was an experienced entrepreneur, while Anteunis, Renvoisé, and Blancher were alumni of the first class of 42, a prominent French programming school. Anteunis, with a background in applied arts before transitioning to coding, found a parallel between the creativity in art and code.
The company developed a collaborative platform centered on natural language processing (NLP) technology, enabling developers to build, train, deploy, and monitor conversational agents, or chatbots. This platform provided developers with a language processing API to integrate AI into their programs. Recast.AI's technology supported over 20 languages and was designed for high-performance natural language processing. For corporate clients, particularly in the telecommunications, banking, and insurance sectors, the firm offered ready-to-use customer support bots designed to automate tasks like order tracking and invoice management.
The startup's journey included launching a beta in February 2016 and securing €1 million in seed funding in June 2016 from investors including Kima Ventures. It gained early traction, serving over 20 major clients like SFR and SNCF. Recast.AI was notably one of the first startups incubated at Station F, Europe's largest startup campus, where it was part of Microsoft's AI Factory program. This rapid growth culminated in its acquisition by German software corporation SAP in January 2018 for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition marked the first exit for a startup from the Station F campus. Following the acquisition, the Recast.AI platform and technology were integrated into SAP's portfolio and became known as SAP Conversational AI, forming a key part of its AI and machine learning capabilities to enhance enterprise software with natural language interfaces.
