RealTimeImage, founded in 1996, initially developed web-based imaging products and services for the healthcare and graphic arts sectors. The company provided a platform for e-commerce between commercial print companies and their customers. In January 2004, RealTimeImage signed a letter of intent to sell its graphic arts division to Kodak Polychrome Graphics, intending to use the proceeds to focus on its healthcare business.

The firm specialized in image-streaming technology, developing algorithms that allowed physicians to distribute and view DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) images more quickly over the internet. This technology was designed to improve workflow efficiency for healthcare providers by enabling faster access to and analysis of medical images. RealTimeImage secured partnerships to integrate its technology into various web portals and platforms. The company raised at least $17 million in funding from investors including Citicorp International Finance Corporation, Comverse Investments, DOR Ventures, Intel Capital, and Newbury Ventures. On July 1, 2005, RealTimeImage was acquired by Idx Systems for $16 million.

While RealTimeImage was acquired, the broader market for real-time medical imaging has continued to evolve significantly. The field now heavily incorporates artificial intelligence and deep learning to assist in diagnoses for cardiology, oncology, and neurology. Current platforms offer real-time image processing, AI-assisted analysis, and automated workflows, often delivered via the cloud to handle large volumes of data. These systems aim to increase productivity, reduce radiologist burnout, and improve diagnostic accuracy by intelligently managing worklists and streamlining communication.
