Rayneer positioned itself as a personalized music television platform, launching in April 2012. The company was founded by Oliver Flueckiger, who also served as the Co-Founder & CEO. Rayneer's core service was to provide users with a free, individualized music video channel accessible globally on a variety of devices, including web browsers and mobile apps for both iOS and Android. The platform was also available through the TV streaming service Wilmaa.
The business model was entirely ad-supported, with a focus on delivering relevant advertising to its user base. Rayneer's personalization engine leveraged a user's Facebook profile to analyze preferences and algorithmically curate a continuous stream of music video content. The user experience was designed to be interactive and intuitive; the platform learned from user behavior, such as 'liking' or 'skipping' songs, to further refine the personalized channel. The service operated legally by handling licensing through Suisa, the cooperative society for music authors and publishers.
The service was designed to automatically adjust streaming quality based on the user's internet speed to ensure a consistent viewing experience. Despite accumulating a user base of 100,000, Rayneer encountered significant financial difficulties. In late August 2014, these financial troubles became critical, leading the company to cease operations and place the service on standby at the end of September 2014.
