Ralph & Russo, founded in 2006 by the Australian duo Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, established itself as a prominent haute couture and luxury goods brand operating from London. The founders' paths crossed by chance in London; Tamara Ralph, a fourth-generation couturier who graduated from the Whitehouse Institute of Design, brought the creative direction, while Michael Russo, a former banker, managed the business side. Their business model focused on creating meticulously handcrafted garments, with a principle of selling only one version of each piece per country to ensure exclusivity. This strategy catered to a high-profile clientele of international businesswomen, royalty, and celebrities, with an average client spending around £50,000 per transaction.
A significant milestone was achieved in 2014 when the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture accredited Ralph & Russo, making it the first British house in nearly a century to receive this honor and be invited to show at Paris Haute Couture Week. The brand gained widespread recognition when Meghan Markle wore one of its gowns for her official engagement photos in 2018. Building on its couture success, the company expanded its offerings by launching a ready-to-wear collection in 2018 and a line of accessories. The business operated through by-appointment maisons in London and Paris, and later opened boutiques in Harrods, Doha, Dubai, and Monaco.
Despite its initial growth and high-profile endorsements, the company faced significant financial challenges. The reduction in red carpet events and formal gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted demand for its high-value gowns. In March 2021, Ralph & Russo was placed into administration to facilitate a restructuring of the business. By July 2021, the brand was acquired by Retail Ecommerce Ventures (REV), a U.S.-based investment firm. Following the acquisition, neither of the founders were expected to continue in an active role with the company. However, the brand's financial difficulties persisted, leading to another potential bankruptcy filing under its new parent company in early 2023.
