In 1988, Christopher Coffey founded SWAT Environmental, becoming one of the first professionals to tackle the invisible threat of radon gas. The business focused on radon mitigation, the process of reducing the concentration of this naturally occurring radioactive gas inside buildings. The company's trajectory changed in 2002 when Jamey Gelina, a realtor, acquired the company. Gelina saw a clear need within the real estate market for a reliable radon mitigation service and set a vision for national expansion. This strategic shift proved effective. By 2005, SWAT Environmental expanded beyond its Michigan roots, and in 2012, it opened its first national franchise in Colorado. The company's growth was recognized in 2012 and 2013 when it was featured on Inc. Magazine's list of fastest-growing companies. A significant event in the company's journey was its acquisition by Mason Wells, a private equity firm, which aimed to consolidate the company's various entities and streamline its growth strategy. Today, SWAT Environmental is the largest radon mitigation company in the United States, serving customers across more than 30 states.
