In 1904, in Wipperfürth, Germany, Adolf Berrenberg and Richard Drecker founded an electric company that would soon be renamed Radium-Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft m.b.H. after a third founder, Richard Kersting, joined. As Germany's oldest active lamp manufacturer, Radium began with carbon filament lamps and evolved with lighting technology, producing tungsten wire lamps and eventually specialized products for a global market. A key figure in the company's early success was Eugen Kersting, who took over leadership after his father's death and drove a period of significant growth. A major turning point occurred in 1988 when lighting giant Osram became the sole shareholder. This marked the end of Radium's independence for over three decades. The company operated as part of Osram and was later integrated into Ledvance, a company spun off from Osram in 2016. This period saw Radium's focus shift towards more specialized lighting solutions, including illuminating all the venues for the 1972 Munich Olympics. The narrative shifted again on October 1, 2020. Radium was acquired by ASC Lighting GmbH, a part of ASC Investment, in a carve-out transaction from Ledvance. This event marked a return to independence for the first time since 1988, allowing the historic brand to forge its own path forward while continuing to focus on high-quality, specialized lighting products made in Germany.
