Quorn Foods began its journey in the 1960s when British entrepreneur J. Arthur Rank envisioned a sustainable protein source to address global food shortages. The company was officially founded in 1985 by Marlow Foods, a joint venture between Rank Hovis McDougall and Imperial Chemical Industries. Quorn's unique selling point was its mycoprotein-based products, derived from a fungus, Fusarium venenatum, offering a meat-free alternative that was both nutritious and environmentally friendly.
In the early years, Quorn faced challenges in gaining consumer acceptance and navigating regulatory approvals. However, its persistence paid off as health trends shifted towards plant-based diets. By the late 1990s, Quorn had established itself as a leader in the meat substitute market in the UK.
A significant milestone in Quorn's history was its acquisition by Monde Nissin Corporation in 2015 for £550 million. This acquisition provided Quorn with the resources to expand its product range and enter new international markets, including the United States and Asia.
Today, Quorn Foods continues to innovate, focusing on sustainability and health. It remains a key player in the global movement towards plant-based eating, driven by a mission to provide delicious, sustainable nutrition for all.
