Quintillion Media operates the digital news platform The Quint, a mobile-first service available in English and Hindi. The company was founded in 2014 by seasoned media professionals Raghav Bahl and Ritu Kapur, following their departure from Network18 after its acquisition by Reliance Industries. Bahl, a serial entrepreneur with a background in management consulting and media, previously founded Network18, growing it into a major Indian media conglomerate. Kapur, who serves as CEO, has an extensive career in broadcast journalism, having been a founding member of Network18 and holding key positions at CNN-IBN and History TV18. Their combined experience from building and managing a large, diversified media group informs Quintillion Media's strategy.
The Quint was launched initially on Facebook in January 2015, with the website following in March 2015. It targets a younger demographic, with data indicating that approximately 70% of its audience is under the age of 44, primarily located in India's Tier 1 cities. The platform's content is designed for mobile and social media distribution, focusing on a broad spectrum of topics including politics, business, entertainment, and lifestyle. A key feature is its explanatory and educational journalism, presented through multimedia formats like documentaries, podcasts, and graphic journalism. The company has established distinct verticals such as 'WebQoof' for fact-checking, 'Quint Neon' for lifestyle content, and a citizen journalism initiative called 'My Report'.
The company's revenue model is primarily driven by digital advertising and branded content. While it has experimented with a premium membership for ad-free access and exclusive webinars, its core strategy remains centered on advertising revenue rather than a hard paywall. In May 2020, Quintillion Media's assets were acquired by Gaurav Mercantiles, a listed company which was subsequently renamed Quint Digital Media Limited, effectively listing The Quint on the Bombay Stock Exchange. In 2023, AMG Media Network, the media arm of the Adani Group, acquired a stake in Quintillion Business Media, a subsidiary of Quint Digital Media that operated BloombergQuint; however, this transaction did not include The Quint itself.
