The story of Questar Pipeline begins not with a single founder, but through a series of corporate evolutions. Its earliest roots trace back to 1928 with the formation of Mountain Fuel Supply Company, a utility born from the discovery of natural gas in Wyoming. This entity focused on serving the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding areas, laying the physical and business groundwork for what was to come. For decades, Mountain Fuel Supply operated as a traditional utility. The significant shift occurred in 1984 when shareholders approved a holding company structure to better manage its diverse operations, from exploration to retail distribution. This new parent entity was named Questar Corporation, and Questar Pipeline Company was formally established as its interstate transmission subsidiary. This wasn't a story of a garage startup, but of strategic corporate restructuring to unlock value within a mature industry. A pivotal chapter began in 2016 when the entire Questar Corporation, including the pipeline business, was acquired by Dominion Energy. This nearly $4.4 billion transaction brought the company under the umbrella of a major East Coast energy player looking to expand its footprint in the Western U.S. However, the ownership changes were not over. In a strategic refocusing on its core utility operations, Dominion Energy sold Questar Pipeline to Southwest Gas Holdings in a deal valued at approximately $1.975 billion, which closed at the end of 2021. This move placed the pipeline assets within a company more focused on gas transportation, once again reshaping its strategic direction.
