Quero Bolsa is an educational marketplace connecting students to discounted opportunities in higher education institutions across Brazil. The platform was launched in 2012 by Bernardo de Pádua, Lucas Gomes, and Thiago Brandão, three computer engineers from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA). The founders initially started a project in 2006 to create a platform for alumni relations, which evolved through various iterations, including RedeAlumni and Captavest, before becoming Quero Bolsa. The company, now named Quero Educação, experienced significant growth, hitting its break-even point in 2013 and being accelerated by Y Combinator in 2016.
The business model addresses the issue of unfilled vacancies in private universities and schools. Quero Bolsa negotiates discounts on these idle spots and offers them to students as scholarships, which can provide discounts of up to 95%. The platform serves students seeking undergraduate, postgraduate, technical, and language courses. Its revenue is generated by taking the first month's tuition fee from the student as a pre-registration or adhesion fee, while subsequent payments go directly to the educational institution. This model provides educational institutions with a channel to increase student enrollment without upfront marketing costs.
Since its launch, the company has expanded its offerings to include a platform for K-12 schools called Melhor Escola and a language course portal, Quero Idiomas. The company has helped over 990,000 students enroll in courses and partners with more than 1,000 institutions. Quero Educação has been recognized by the World Economic Forum as one of the 50 most impactful startups in Latin America.
