Puurakentajat Group Oy was a Finnish construction and engineering company established in 2006, which specialized in wood technology and solid wood construction. The company focused on designing and building ecologically sustainable structures, including single-family houses, apartment buildings, schools, and daycare centers. The business model centered on providing comprehensive construction services, from design and production to the final building phase, positioning itself as a contractor with overall project responsibility. This integrated approach allowed the firm to leverage its expertise in solid wood, particularly Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), a method in which it was a forerunner in Finland.
Founded by Jyrki Huttunen, the company grew over the years, becoming a group in 2020. A significant milestone occurred in November 2021 when Onvest Oy and Finnish Industry Investment Ltd (Tesi) acquired a stake in the company. By January 2023, the family-owned Onvest Oy became the majority shareholder after Huttunen sold his stake, aiming to make Puurakentajat a leading entity in the Finnish wood construction industry. Mikko Leino served as the CEO and technology director. Notable projects included collaborations on the Helsinki Central Library Oodi and the Supercell headquarters.
The company's service catered to a market increasingly interested in ecological and healthy living. Its key product was the construction of buildings using solid wood, which offers benefits such as being naturally breathable, balancing indoor humidity, and sequestering carbon. Puurakentajat operated several subsidiaries, including Timberpoint Oy, a factory producing massive wood elements, to support its projects. Despite its strong market position and project pipeline, the company faced significant financial challenges due to a rapid downturn in the construction market. In November 2023, Puurakentajat Group Oy and all its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy, citing the inability to maintain profitability amidst the difficult market conditions and an insurmountable debt of nearly 7.5 million euros.
