Established in 2003 and formerly based in Santa Clara, California, PureWave Networks, Inc. was a developer of advanced 4G wireless base stations for the telecommunications market. The company specialized in creating compact, high-performance outdoor base stations for both WiMAX and LTE networks, addressing a client base that ranged from small wireless internet service providers (WISPs) to large mobile service operators. PureWave's business model revolved around the sale of this hardware, which aimed to provide a lower total cost of ownership through superior performance, reduced equipment costs, and minimal power consumption.
A key milestone was the 2009 introduction of the PureWave Quantum family of mobile WiMAX base stations, which expanded in subsequent years. The company later developed the PureWave Constellation family, a line of LTE small cell base stations. These products featured PureMax™, a smart antenna technology designed to deliver the coverage and capacity of a much larger macro base station but in a smaller, more versatile form factor. This allowed for flexible deployment in various environments, from dense urban areas to rural settings. The product architecture was open, enabling customers to integrate components from the wider WiMAX ecosystem.
As a privately held company, PureWave Networks was backed by several prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firms, including Allegis Capital, Benhamou Global Ventures, ATA Ventures, Core Capital, and Leapfrog Ventures. Over its lifetime, the company raised approximately $17 million in funding through multiple rounds. In a strategic exit in September 2014, the company's assets were acquired. Redline Communications purchased the company's technology, intellectual property, and patents for a cash price of $2 million, with the goal of accelerating its own LTE technology development. Concurrently, PureWave's Quantum WiMAX product line was sold to one of its customers, Mercury Networks.
