Pure Health Solutions, Inc. (PHSI), operating under the brand Pure Water Technology (PWT), was established in 1996 by founder Craig Story. The company carved a niche in the workplace hydration market by manufacturing and distributing point-of-use water purification systems, positioning itself as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to traditional bottled water services. PHSI developed its own brand of water coolers, manufacturing them in its facility in South Korea, and featured patented technologies like Auto-Tank Sanitization (ATS) to maintain water purity.
The company's business model is multifaceted, operating through both direct and indirect channels. In its direct channel, PHSI rents and services its own units to commercial clients across the United States. This is complemented by a robust indirect channel, where the company sells its purification systems and related parts to a network of over 90 independent dealers, which also operate as franchises. This dual-channel approach, combining direct rental income with equipment sales and franchise fees, allowed for broad market penetration. Clients range from small offices to large manufacturing and retail applications, all seeking to reduce the logistical hassle and environmental impact of bottled water.
A significant milestone in the company's journey was the investment from private equity firm ClearLight Partners in 2009. This partnership fueled a period of substantial growth, enabling PHSI to expand its dealer network and launch a direct-to-consumer initiative that established seven regional branches in new markets. This strategy led to the placement of over 100,000 coolers during ClearLight's ownership period. The growth culminated on December 18, 2018, when Quench USA, a segment of AquaVenture Holdings, acquired PHSI for approximately $57.6 million. This acquisition was a strategic move for Quench to expand its dealer network and enhance its product development and manufacturing capabilities. Today, PHSI operates as a subsidiary of its parent company, Culligan Quench.
