The story begins not with a startup, but with a state-owned enterprise. In 1967, the director of Indonesia's state oil and gas company, Pertamina, Ibnu Sutowo, initiated the construction of the Pertamina Central Hospital (RSPP) in Jakarta. Initially, the hospital catered exclusively to Pertamina employees and their families. Recognizing the need to separate its core oil and gas business from other activities, Pertamina established a subsidiary in October 1997, PT Rumah Sakit Pusat Pertamina, to manage its healthcare facilities. This entity began serving the general public and, in 2002, was renamed PT Pertamina Bina Medika, later known as Pertamedika. Pertamedika's mandate expanded significantly in December 2016 when the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises appointed it as the holding company for all state-owned hospitals, creating the Indonesia Healthcare Corporation (IHC). This strategic move consolidated numerous state-owned medical facilities under one umbrella, aiming to improve service standards and create a national healthcare powerhouse. By 2020, IHC was actively acquiring and integrating other state-owned hospital entities into its network. A major turning point arrived in late 2023 and was finalized in 2024. IHC divested a 36% stake, split equally between the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) and the Hong Kong-based conglomerate Swire Pacific. This strategic partnership brought in new capital and international expertise, intended to modernize the hospital network and accelerate transformation in Indonesia's healthcare sector. Today, IHC stands as a critical player in Indonesia's mission to build national health resilience, managing a vast network of hospitals and clinics across the archipelago.
