In 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, the Minski family founded Procaps, a pharmaceutical company that would grow from a local operation into an international player. Led by founder Ruben Minski, the company focused on developing and manufacturing pharmaceutical solutions, with a particular specialty in soft gelatin capsules, or 'softgels'. This focus on advanced drug delivery systems allowed Procaps to build a strong reputation, providing services not just for its own brands but also for other pharmaceutical companies. The company established a vertically integrated model, controlling everything from research and development to manufacturing and distribution, which fueled its expansion across Latin America. A pivotal moment in the company's journey came in September 2021. Procaps completed a business combination with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Union Acquisition Corp. II. This transaction valued Procaps at approximately $1.1 billion and resulted in the company being listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol 'PROC'. The move was designed to fund further organic growth, expand production capacity, and pursue strategic acquisitions in the region.
