Primus Telecommunications Group, Inc. was a multinational telecommunications company founded in 1994 by K. Paul Singh, initially focused on providing long-distance services. The company expanded rapidly, entering the Australian market in 1996 by acquiring Axicorp and becoming one of the first carriers to receive a license when Australia deregulated its telecom industry in 1997. This was followed by expansion into the UK and Canada. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Primus grew through a series of acquisitions, including Eclipse Telecommunications, Hotkey Internet Services, and the retail operations of Telegroup Inc., significantly building its customer base. In 1999, the company launched the iPrimus brand to cater to the residential market with bundled voice, data, and internet services.
The business operated by providing a comprehensive suite of telecommunication services to residential consumers, small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), and corporate clients. Revenue was generated through the sale of these services, which included fixed-line voice, mobile telephony, broadband internet (ADSL, ADSL2+), VoIP, and data services like VPNs and web hosting. A key part of its strategy involved owning and operating its own infrastructure, including fibre networks in major Australian cities and data centers, which allowed it to offer competitive services. For its business clients, the company provided managed services, IP networks, and hosted phone systems under brands like Primus Accella.
The company's history is marked by significant corporate restructuring and acquisitions. After facing financial difficulties, the U.S. parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, emerging later that year. In a major strategic shift, the Australian operations of Primus, including the iPrimus brand and its physical network assets, were acquired by M2 Group for $192.4 million in June 2012. This entity later merged with Vocus Communications in 2016, making iPrimus a brand within the Vocus Group. Separately, the Canadian arm of Primus was acquired by Distributel Communications in 2021. The original U.S. parent company, Primus Telecommunications Group, Inc., has since transitioned into a diversified holding company known as Innovate Corp.
