Prime Focus Limited (PFL) is a global media and entertainment industry services provider, founded in 1997 by Namit Malhotra, who started the business in a Mumbai garage. The company was incorporated on June 24, 1997, through the merger of 'Video Works', belonging to Namit's father Naresh Malhotra, and Namit Malhotra's 'Video Workshop'. Coming from a film family, Malhotra's grandfather was a cinematographer for one of India's first color films. He established Video Workshop with three of his teachers from computer graphics school, initially providing editing services for television shows and music videos.
Prime Focus went public in 2006, listing on the BSE and NSE in India, and began expanding globally by acquiring post-production facilities in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. A significant milestone was the 2014 merger of its creative services subsidiary, Prime Focus World, with the UK-based visual effects (VFX) house Double Negative (DNEG). This move created one of the world's largest independent VFX, stereo conversion, and animation companies. PFL's business model is centered on providing a comprehensive suite of services to clients like major studios, broadcasters, and advertising agencies. Revenue is generated through project-based fees for creative services and recurring revenue from its technology products.
The company's service offerings are extensive, covering creative services such as visual effects, stereo 3D conversion, and animation. It also provides technology products through its arm, Prime Focus Technologies (PFT), which developed the CLEAR® Media ERP suite, an AI-powered, cloud-enabled platform for managing content workflows. In July 2024, the DNEG Group, of which PFL is the parent company, completed the acquisition of Prime Focus Technologies to enhance its media tech and distribution services. Additionally, Prime Focus offers production services like equipment rental and operates a large studio facility in Mumbai. Its post-production services include digital intermediate and picture post. The company is noted for pioneering technologies like View-D™ for 2D to 3D conversion and has received a Primetime Emmy® Award for its DAX Digital Dailies®.
