Prendea is an online learning platform offering live after-school classes for Spanish-speaking children aged 4 to 15. Founded in 2020 by Gonzalo Aguilar and Benjamin Garmendia in Lima, Peru, the company emerged from the founders' previous experiences with both in-person tutoring and a curricular math platform called Check. Aguilar and Garmendia, who started tutoring together to help school-aged children, identified a need for more accessible and diverse learning opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst, pushing them to pivot their business model entirely and launch Prendea.
The company operates on a subscription-based model, where a fixed monthly fee grants children unlimited access to a wide array of live, extracurricular classes. The course catalog is extensive, covering subjects from astronomy and coding to TikTok choreography and fashion design, with over 1,000 live classes available weekly. This model is designed to allow children in Latin America to explore their passions outside the traditional school curriculum. Prendea participated in the Winter 2021 batch of the accelerator Y Combinator, which provided significant support for its growth. The platform managed to serve over 15,000 children within its early years of operation.
