The story begins not with a single founder, but with a product. In the late 1990s, an Israeli company called Nexus Telecommunications Systems developed a vehicle location product named 'Pointer.' This technology, focused on fleet management and stolen vehicle recovery, laid the groundwork for what was to come. The business formally known as Pointer Telocation was established and went public on the NASDAQ. For years, the company grew, providing mobile resource management (MRM) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to automotive and insurance industries. The company developed a cloud-based software platform to capture and analyze mobility data, helping customers optimize their assets. A significant turning point came in 2019. After a two-year strategic relationship, U.S.-based I.D. Systems, a provider of enterprise asset management technology, announced its intention to acquire Pointer Telocation. The deal, valued at approximately $140 million in cash and stock, was a strategic move to create a global leader in the IoT and M2M (Machine to Machine) space. In October 2019, the acquisition was finalized. The two companies merged under a new holding company and rebranded as PowerFleet, Inc., trading on both the NASDAQ and Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. This event marked the end of Pointer Telocation as a standalone entity and the beginning of its new chapter as an integral part of a larger, combined powerhouse in the world of connected vehicle and asset tracking technology.
