Point Transaction Systems AB operated as a prominent European provider of electronic payment solutions, specializing in multi-channel services for a diverse merchant base. The company was established in 1988 and demonstrated consistent double-digit revenue growth for nearly a decade prior to its major corporate transition. Its clientele ranged from small independent shops to large, multi-national retail chains, hotels, and business-to-business customers.
The core of Point's business was a recurring subscription services model, ensuring clients always had up-to-date security, compliance, and technology. This model provided merchants with comprehensive services including point-of-sale technology, gateway services, robust card encryption, and multi-channel e-commerce processing. A key operational feature was its proprietary multi-country payment software, developed by a team of 125 software engineers, which facilitated seamless transactions for both physical and internet-based payments across Europe. This system was designed to work harmoniously with any bank or acquirer, offering flexibility to its merchants by efficiently routing transactions through its network of gateways to a wide array of financial institutions.
In 2004, the private equity firm Nordic Capital acquired Point and transformed it into a leading European electronic payment solutions provider. A significant milestone in the company's history occurred on November 14, 2011, when VeriFone Systems, Inc. announced its agreement to acquire Point from Nordic Capital for approximately €600 million, in addition to retiring about €170 million of Point's debt. This acquisition was finalized in early 2012. Following the acquisition, Point initially operated as a VeriFone company. By January 2015, Point Transaction Systems AB was fully integrated into the global VeriFone conglomerate and officially renamed Verifone Sweden AB.
