Playrion is a French video game development studio specializing in management simulation games for mobile platforms. The company's origins trace back to a student project, "Airlines Manager," a browser-based game created by Benjamin Cohen. This initial endeavor's success led Cohen to officially found Playrion in Paris in 2010 to support and expand upon the game. The studio launched within a French incubator and initially focused on the web version of its flagship title.
A significant milestone occurred in 2014 when Playrion adapted "Airlines Manager" for mobile devices, which propelled the company into a period of exponential growth. By 2020, the game had amassed a community of over 10 million players. This success culminated in the acquisition of Playrion by Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive in July 2020 for a reported $17.9M, a move designed to help Paradox expand its footprint in the mobile gaming market. Following the acquisition, Playrion became Paradox's eighth internal studio and its first in France. The studio continued to expand its portfolio, releasing "Airport Simulator: First Class" in 2022.
Playrion's business model is centered on free-to-play games, generating revenue through in-app purchases and advertisements. Their primary product, "Airlines Manager," is a complex, real-time airline management simulation. Players act as CEOs, creating and managing their own airline by purchasing or leasing aircraft, setting routes between over 2,600 airports, managing staff, and investing in research and development. The game offers deep strategic choices, allowing players to pursue low-cost or premium service models by adjusting ticket prices, configuring aircraft seating, and developing different services. Its realistic approach is highlighted by a partnership with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) established in 2017.
