Play Today is an Australian-based web3 technology company specializing in golf experiences, founded in 2022. The company launched with a $1.2 million investment from tech entrepreneur and CEO Clive Mayhew. Mayhew, who also serves as the chair of Fishburners, compared the current development of the web3 sector to his early days at Netscape during the pioneering phase of the internet. His investment aims to enable the estimated 70 million golfers globally to connect, score, and experience the game online.
The company's core offerings integrate the physical game of golf with digital technology through a suite of web3 products. These include a consumer digital wallet integrated into a golf scoring app, a golf NFT marketplace, and an expansive metaverse. A key feature is Golf Ai, an artificial intelligence assistant designed to make the complex rules of golf more accessible to players of all levels. Developed with input from leading golf rules officials, this AI runs on top of OpenAI and can be integrated into GPS scoring apps and golf carts via an API.
The Play Today Metaverse allows users to connect in an interactive 3D virtual world. Participants can showcase digital golf collectibles (NFTs), get virtual flyover experiences of over 40,000 golf courses, and interact with others in a virtual clubhouse. A significant feature of the metaverse is its capability to livestream professional golf tournaments, such as the NSW Open Golf Championship, allowing viewers to control the broadcast interactively. In partnership with Drummond Golf, Play Today also launched the Drummond Golf Innovation Centre within the metaverse, where players can use augmented reality to view new products from leading golf brands.
