Plasticity Labs, also known as The Smile Epidemic Inc., was a software company that provided an employee engagement and wellness platform designed to measure and improve workplace culture. Founded in 2012 by Jim Moss, Jennifer Moss, and Lance Mohring, the Kitchener, Canada-based startup aimed to enhance employee happiness and performance through tools based on positive psychology and neuroscience.
The company's platform integrated a survey engine, analytics, and social tools to provide employees with daily training to improve their well-being, while offering organizations data to track key performance indicators. Features included daily happiness ratings, a social feed for sharing successes, user profiles to foster connections, and an insights dashboard for analyzing survey data. The business model focused on selling its platform to small- and medium-sized businesses to help them build a more positive and connected work environment.
The inspiration for Plasticity Labs came from co-founder Jim Moss's personal health crisis in 2009. A former professional lacrosse player, Moss was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease that left him temporarily unable to walk. During his recovery, he discovered that focusing on gratitude and maintaining a positive mood significantly aided his physical rehabilitation, an experience rooted in the concept of neuroplasticity. This led to the creation of The Smile Epidemic, a social project that evolved into Plasticity Labs, with a mission to apply these principles to the workplace.
Over its lifespan, the company raised at least $3.05 million in funding and worked with over 150 organizations. However, in April 2020, Plasticity Labs announced it was closing permanently, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
