In 1937, amidst the Spanish Civil War, British journalist John Langdon-Davies and aid worker Eric Muggeridge witnessed the conflict's devastating impact on children. They founded an organization with a simple, direct model: "Foster Parents Plan for Children in Spain." The core idea was to create a personal link between a sponsor and a child, providing not just food and shelter, but a sense that someone cared. The organization adapted as global crises evolved. During World War II, it became the "Foster Parents Plan for War Children," aiding young refugees across Europe. After the war, its focus shifted from immediate relief in Europe to long-term development in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. A significant turning point came in the 1970s. Reflecting its expanded global reach and mission, the organization rebranded to Plan International. This wasn't just a name change; it marked a strategic pivot from a sponsorship model to broader community development programs. The organization gained recognition from the United Nations Economic and Social Council, cementing its status as a major international NGO. Today, Plan International operates in over 80 countries, focusing on children's rights and, specifically, equality for girls. This modern mission addresses systemic issues, aiming to empower girls who are often the most marginalized. From its origins in a specific conflict, the organization has evolved into a global force for structural change.
