Plactherm is a company that has developed a smart underfloor heating system. The company was founded in Madrid in 2015 by Lluc Marti, a product engineer with a background as a composite manager at high-performance car manufacturer Koenigsegg. After being involved in several startups, Marti founded Plactherm to develop modular underfloor heating that can be adjusted to individual occupants.
The core of Plactherm's business is a connected, electric heating tile measuring 60 x 60 cm. This system allows for a high level of zoning, giving each person the ability to control their own comfort temperature in specific, pre-programmed areas. Each tile operates independently, containing a heating element, insulation, temperature and pressure sensors, and communication electronics. This setup allows the power, approximately 100 watts per square meter, to be adjusted based on building occupancy and user preference via a smartphone application, eliminating the need for a central control unit. The system is designed for easy installation with a simple click-in-place mechanism.
Plactherm's business model targets energy efficiency and personalized comfort in spaces like offices. The company estimates potential energy savings of around 30% by avoiding the heating of unoccupied areas. For a 300-square-meter office, this could translate to savings of approximately €2,000 per year. Revenue is generated from the sale of the product and related services. The system provides gentle, underfloor heating, which is often considered more comfortable, and achieves low thermal inertia, heating up in about twenty minutes compared to several hours for some competing systems. By focusing heat where people are, it aims to reduce general building temperatures by up to 3°C. The technology is patented and positioned to serve a market for intelligent and efficient energy solutions.
