PlaceWar is a decentralized, multi-chain, strategic artillery game operating within the Play-to-Earn (P2E) GameFi sector. Founded in 2021 by Myrtle Anne Ramos, the company has secured $1.8M in funding through two rounds, including a seed round on October 29, 2021, and an ICO on November 13, 2021, from investors like LD Capital, AU21 Capital, and X21 Digital. Ramos, a serial entrepreneur with a background in technology and marketing for major brands like Apple and GoDaddy, leveraged her experience in the blockchain space since 2016 to co-found PlaceWar. She is also the founder of the blockchain PR firm Block Tides and an official influencer for CoinMarketCap.
The business model is centered on a dual-token economy within a gamified metaverse. Players engage in turn-based artillery combat, inspired by classic games like Worms, to earn rewards. The ecosystem is comprised of two core systems: the Battle System and the Pixel System. The Battle System includes Player vs. Environment (PVE), Player vs. Player (PVP), and Guild War modes. To participate, players must own at least three tank NFTs, which can be acquired on the marketplace. Winning battles yields rewards in the form of tokens and NFTs. The in-game economy utilizes two primary tokens: $PLACE, a governance token for staking and voting, and $GEAR, the in-game currency for activities like crafting tanks and upgrading parts. The second system, the Pixel System, is the game's land component, featuring a map called Placedonia divided into 90,000 NFT pixel lands. Owners can build on their pixels, collect resources, and invade other pixels to loot resources and expand their territory, allowing for the creation of large-scale collaborative art, a concept inspired by Reddit's r/place.
The company's monetization strategy involves transaction fees and NFT sales. Players can craft new tanks, which are NFTs, to expand their collection or sell them on the marketplace. The platform operates on a multi-chain infrastructure, initially deploying on Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, and Conflux to offer users flexibility. PlaceWar targets both casual P2E players and more financially invested players who may commission others to play on their behalf, creating a two-sided market. The game was scheduled to launch in December 2021, with subsequent plans for PVP modes, the Pixel land system, and multichain deployment in early 2022.
