Pika Energy, founded in 2010 by MIT-educated engineers Ben Polito and Joshua Kaufman, carved a niche in the renewable energy sector by developing and manufacturing solar-plus-storage solutions for residential and commercial markets. Polito's upbringing on an off-grid farm in Maine fostered an early interest in energy, leading him to study engineering at MIT, where he met Kaufman. Their shared vision was to make clean power more accessible and reliable, initially focusing on residential wind turbines before expanding to a broader energy management platform.
The company's core offering was the Pika Energy Island™, a comprehensive home energy storage platform designed to integrate solar PV, smart batteries, electrical loads, and the grid. This system operates on a patented 380VDC nanogrid technology called REbus™, which combines power transmission, control, and data communications on the same wiring, simplifying installation and improving efficiency. The platform included the Pika Islanding Inverter, which could operate with or without a grid connection, and PV Link optimizers that managed power from solar arrays. For energy storage, Pika developed the Harbor™ and Coral™ smart batteries, leveraging technologies like Panasonic's Li-ion cells and absorbed glass mat technology to provide backup power and enable self-consumption of solar energy.
Pika Energy's business model centered on manufacturing these advanced power electronics and selling them through a network of certified installers and distributors across North America and Puerto Rico. The company targeted homeowners and businesses seeking energy resilience, reduced electricity costs, and greater control over their power consumption. In April 2019, Generac Holdings Inc., a major manufacturer of power generation equipment, acquired Pika Energy. The acquisition combined Pika's expertise in battery storage technology with Generac's manufacturing scale and distribution network, aiming to accelerate the availability of intelligent home energy management systems. This strategic move allowed Pika's technology to be integrated into Generac's offerings, such as the PWRcell energy storage system, making advanced solar-plus-storage solutions more accessible to a wider market.
