Perk.com was a mobile-first rewards platform that incentivized consumer engagement for brands through a digital currency, "Perk Points". Founded in 2012 by Roj Niyogi and Adam Alexander Salamon and headquartered in Austin, Texas, the company provided a suite of mobile applications and websites where users could earn points for activities like watching videos, playing games, searching the web, and shopping. These points could be redeemed for gift cards, prizes, or cash.
The company's business model was centered on connecting advertisers with a millennial audience, leveraging the rewards system to increase user retention and engagement, which in turn provided valuable data insights to brands. Perk.com generated revenue by monetizing the user interactions on its platform through advertising. In December 2014, Ted Hastings, an entrepreneur with a background in scaling digital media companies, joined as President to focus on strategic growth and acquisitions.
Perk.com pursued an aggressive growth strategy, making several key acquisitions. In 2015, it acquired AppRedeem, an alternative payments and virtual rewards innovator, and Playerize (d.b.a. SuperRewards), expanding its presence in the virtual rewards and alternative payments market. In February 2016, Perk acquired the Viggle app, a mobile application that rewarded users for content consumption and discovery.
In December 2016, RhythmOne plc, a digital advertising technology company, acquired Perk.com in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately US$42.5 million. Following the acquisition, Perk's shares were de-listed from the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Perk applications were ultimately shut down on December 1, 2019.
