PedidosYa operates as a multinational online ordering and delivery platform headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay. The company was founded in 2009 by three university students, Ariel Burschtin, Álvaro García, and Ruben Sosenke, who developed the concept as part of a university project at Universidad ORT Uruguay. The initial idea was to create a website to simplify ordering food online. After receiving a US$20,000 grant from the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) and an initial capital of US$50,000 from Fondo Emprender, the first prototype was launched in Uruguay with 40 restaurants.
The business quickly expanded its operations to other Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia. A significant milestone occurred in 2014 when the German company Delivery Hero acquired a controlling 70% stake in PedidosYa, which was instrumental in the company's subsequent expansion and market consolidation. This acquisition provided the resources for further growth, including the acquisition of Glovo's Latin American operations in 2020.
PedidosYa's business model centers on connecting users with a wide network of partner businesses through its mobile app and website. The platform generates revenue primarily through commission fees charged to partner restaurants and stores for each order processed. Additional income streams include delivery fees paid by customers, subscription plans, and in-app advertising. The company's value proposition is built on convenience, offering users a single point of access to a vast selection of goods and services. For its business partners, PedidosYa provides access to a large customer base and handles the delivery logistics.
Beyond its core restaurant delivery service, PedidosYa has diversified into the quick commerce sector. In 2020, it launched 'PedidosYa Market', a network of dark stores dedicated to fulfilling online orders for groceries, pharmacy items, and other consumer goods, with delivery times averaging between 10 to 15 minutes. As of May 2022, there were 170 such stores across 13 countries. The company has also ventured into financial services, offering loans and digital wallet-like accounts to its restaurant partners. Operating in 15 Latin American countries, the platform serves millions of users and partners with tens of thousands of businesses.
