Pealock

Pealock is a Czech company, established in 2019, that manufactures a smart electronic lock for sports and mobility equipment. The idea originated from founder and CEO Marek Vala, a former professional skier, after his expensive skis were stolen and his insurance did not cover the loss. This experience, combined with his background in the automotive industry, led him to develop a security device to prevent such thefts. The initial concept was sketched in 2017, with development beginning in 2018. The company launched in 2020 after a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $37,000.

The business operates on a direct-to-consumer model through its website and also seeks partnerships with retailers and insurance companies. The core product is the Pealock 2, a lightweight and portable electronic lock. Its primary features include a motion sensor, an integrated alarm, GPS tracking, and notifications sent to a user's smartphone via Bluetooth. If the user is out of Bluetooth range, the device uses a GSM network to call the user's phone. The lock is controlled through a mobile application or an included NFC card, making it accessible even without a smartphone. The strap contains steel cables and a wire connected to the alarm to resist cutting. The product is manufactured and assembled in the Czech Republic.

Pealock's business model involves the sale of the hardware, with an optional annual subscription for the GSM data plan that enables communication beyond Bluetooth range. The company has expanded its product line to include various types of locks, such as chain, folding, and U-shaped locks with similar smart features, as well as a GPS tracker. Shortly after its launch in 2020, Pealock won the Design Concept category at the Red Dot Awards. In 2021, the company secured investments from Průša Research and Nation 1, which facilitated the start of mass production.
