Panda Green Energy Group Limited, now known as Beijing Energy International Holding Co. Ltd. as of September 2020, operates as a Hong Kong-based investment holding company primarily focused on the renewable energy sector. Initially established in 2000 and formerly named United Photovoltaics Group, the company's core business involves the development, investment, operation, and management of power plants. Its revenue is generated through the sale of electricity produced by its portfolio of energy projects. The company strategically develops and acquires power plants, with a focus on solar, while also diversifying into wind and hydropower.
A significant milestone for the company was the launch of its visually distinctive panda-shaped solar power plants. The first, a 50MW facility, was connected to the grid in Datong, China, in June 2017. This initiative was part of a collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to promote sustainable development and engage youth. The concept, reportedly inspired by a high school student, involves using different colored solar panels to create the image of a panda from an aerial view. The company announced plans for a "Panda 100 Program," aiming to build more of these creative power plants along the "Belt and Road" initiative countries. A second 60MW panda plant was completed in Guigang, Guangxi, in October 2017.
In February 2020, Beijing Energy Group became the largest shareholder, injecting new strategic direction and capital. This led to the official name change to better reflect its new ownership and a clearer, international business focus. The company's portfolio is concentrated in China, across regions like Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Ningxia, and Shanxi, but it has also included overseas projects, such as the acquisition of 82.4 MW of solar capacity in the UK, which were later sold as part of a strategic realignment. As of late 2019, the group and its associates managed 61 solar power plants with a total installed capacity of approximately 1,979.2 MW.
