In the resource-rich lands of Western Manitoba, an idea took root: to develop the province's first-ever potash mine with a new economic model. This led to the formation of the Potash and Agri Development Corporation of Manitoba, or PADCOM. Led by President Daymon Guillas, the company secured mineral rights to a significant potash deposit near the hamlet of Harrowby. PADCOM’s approach was different from the start. Instead of conventional mining, they opted for a more technologically advanced and environmentally friendly selective solution mining process. This method involves injecting a heated brine solution deep underground to dissolve the potash, which is then pumped to the surface, leaving most of the salt behind and reducing the surface footprint. A significant chapter in PADCOM's journey has been its partnership with local Indigenous communities. The nearby Gambler First Nation became a 20% equity partner in the project, a move hailed as a step toward economic reconciliation. In February 2025, the company signed a historic royalty agreement with the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), granting the MMF a share of the project's revenue. After years of development and navigating the regulatory landscape, PADCOM received final provincial approval to commence commercial production in March 2023. With government support, including a loan to connect the mine to hydroelectric power, PADCOM is positioned to be a low-carbon fertilizer producer, aiming to build a sustainable operation for the benefit of the community and the province.
