In 2002, Kieron O'Brien and Jason Velody founded PacketExchange to create a new kind of network. Their idea was to build a wide-area internet exchange that would bypass the traffic jams of the public internet. The company used its own private fiber-optic backbone to connect data centers in Europe, Asia, and North America, offering services like ethernet private lines and content delivery. This provided a more reliable and faster connection for businesses that needed to move large amounts of data, such as social network Bebo and the band Radiohead, who famously used the service for the online release of their album "In Rainbows". In 2005, PacketExchange expanded by acquiring XchangePoint, another peering and interconnectivity service provider. The company continued to grow, securing a $12 million investment in 2008. The final chapter for PacketExchange as an independent company was written in May 2011, when it was acquired by Global Telecom & Technology (GTT) for $20 million.
