Packet Island, Inc. operated as a specialized provider of Software-as-a-SaaS quality of service (QoS) assessment and monitoring tools tailored for Voice over IP (VoIP) and video networks. The company was founded by Praveen Kumar.

The core of Packet Island's business was its award-winning PacketSmart® product, a platform designed to ensure a high-quality user experience on VoIP and Video over IP networks. This technology served telecommunications service providers, enabling them to proactively monitor and manage the performance of their communication services. The system helped these providers reduce their operational support costs and minimize customer churn by preemptively identifying and addressing network issues. The business model was centered on providing these tools as a service, allowing for rapid and cost-effective deployment for their clients.

A significant milestone in the company's history occurred in October 2009 when it was acquired by BroadSoft, a prominent provider of VoIP application software for the telecommunications industry. The acquisition was a strategic move for BroadSoft to enhance its solutions portfolio, offering its service provider clients advanced capabilities for end-to-end, carrier-grade service delivery and monitoring. Following the acquisition, Packet Island's founder, Praveen Kumar, transitioned to the role of BroadSoft PacketSmart Chief Technologist. BroadSoft itself was later acquired by Cisco in February 2018 for approximately $1.9 billion.
