Overblog operates a blogging platform aimed at simplifying content creation for a broad user base without requiring technical expertise. It was established in 2004 in Toulouse, France, by co-founders Frédéric Montagnon, Gilles Moncaubeig, and Julien Romanetto. The founders, all software engineers, were driven by the vision to democratize blogging by removing technical barriers, allowing anyone to share their passions online.
The company's platform allows users to create blogs, aggregate posts from various social networks, and organize content streams from sources like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The business model is primarily based on advertising revenue and premium subscription services. A key feature of its monetization strategy is a revenue-sharing model, where a portion of the advertising income generated on a blog is paid to the content creator as "copyright royalties". Overblog provides a freemium service; users can start a blog for free, which includes hosting and Overblog's branding, or opt for paid premium plans that offer features like custom domain names, the removal of ads, and access to premium themes.
Significant milestones in Overblog's history include securing an investment from the TF1 group in 2007, which fueled further development. In October 2010, Overblog merged with Wikio and Ebuzzing to form the Wikio Group, which was later rebranded as Ebuzzing Group, with the goal of becoming a European leader in social media. The company expanded its reach by launching in the United States in 2012. A major corporate change occurred in April 2014 when Overblog was acquired by the French digital media company Webedia for approximately €3.3 million. At the time of the acquisition, Overblog was generating around €3 million in annual revenue and had an audience of over 50 million unique visitors per month. The platform is available in five languages: French, English, German, Spanish, and Italian.
