OrthoWorx is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 to advance the interests of the orthopedic industry in Northern Indiana, a region known as the "Orthopedic Capital of the World®". It was established with initial funding from a $7 million grant by The Lilly Endowment, following a study that identified challenges to the global competitiveness of the local industry cluster. The organization operates as a catalyst, fostering collaboration between orthopedic companies, academic institutions, and community stakeholders to ensure the region's long-term growth and sustainability.
OrthoWorx focuses its efforts on three core strategic pillars: Talent Development, Talent Attraction, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Through its Talent Development initiatives, the organization partners with K-12 schools, colleges, and universities to create educational programs, experiential learning, and internships that build a skilled workforce pipeline for the industry. Talent Attraction efforts aim to draw new professionals to the region by highlighting its quality of life and career opportunities. The Innovation & Entrepreneurship pillar supports the local ecosystem by assisting startups and fostering research and development through collaborations with partners like AcceLINX, a musculoskeletal health business accelerator, and Plug and Play.
As a community-based initiative, OrthoWorx is funded by industry partners, academic institutions, and philanthropic organizations. It works to secure and deploy significant funding for regional development projects. For instance, the organization is directing a $30 million state appropriation toward projects addressing workforce housing and the creation of an orthopedic innovation research center. These initiatives aim to redevelop community areas and provide the infrastructure needed to retain and attract both talent and businesses, thereby strengthening the industry cluster that accounts for a significant portion of the global orthopedics market.
