Spendscape by McKinsey, formerly known as Orpheus GmbH, is a Software as a Service (SaaS) analytics platform focused on procurement spend. The company was originally founded as Orpheus in Nuremberg, Germany, in 2005. Jörg Dittrich, serving as CEO, along with Michael Lauer, Christian Ruck, Jörg Mengeler, Marco Pachovsky, and Matthias Schumann, guided the company from its inception. Orpheus was established to address a gap in the procurement software market, which at the time lacked analytical and data-driven solutions. A key milestone was a seed investment from UVC Partners in 2012, which supported its growth from an idea to an established software company.
In February 2020, McKinsey & Company acquired Orpheus to enhance its digital procurement practice, integrating Orpheus's technology and its 35-person team into McKinsey's Operations practice. The initial offering was branded "Spend Intelligence by McKinsey," which later evolved into "Orpheus, a McKinsey company," and finally, in 2021, was rebranded as Spendscape by McKinsey. The acquisition combined Orpheus's platform technology with McKinsey's deep industry and consulting expertise.
The Spendscape platform provides clients, including CPOs, CFOs, and category managers, with comprehensive transparency and analysis of their procurement data. It operates on a SaaS model, offering solutions that can be part of a McKinsey engagement or through direct subscription. The platform ingests, harmonizes, and enriches purchasing data from various client systems to create a single source of truth. Its core functionalities include AI-enabled spend categorization, prescriptive and predictive analytics, and identifying savings opportunities. The service also features modules for tracking carbon emissions (Scope 3) and leverages generative AI for conversational data interaction and input cost modeling. By analyzing all spend data, the platform helps organizations optimize external expenditures, manage supplier relationships, and track the impact of procurement initiatives.
