Orobind Fitness Technologies Pvt. Ltd. was an at-home personal fitness technology company that operated as a mobile marketplace for fitness coaches. The company was founded in December 2014 by Satya Vyas and Shubhanshu Srivastava, both graduates of IIT-Roorkee. The idea was originally conceptualized in 2012, but their respective careers at Chai Point and Snapdeal delayed the launch. Vyas's entrepreneurial journey was marked by previous startup failures, which provided valuable experience for building Orobind. Srivastava brought the technical expertise, having been with Snapdeal during its transition to an e-commerce marketplace.
The business operated on a curated marketplace model, connecting users with vetted and police-verified personal fitness trainers who would provide services at the client's home. The service was delivered through a mobile application where users could view detailed profiles of experts, book sessions, and track fitness metrics. The primary client base consisted of women aged 25-45 who preferred the convenience of in-home training over going to a gym. Revenue was generated through a subscription-based model, with plans typically starting from three months, comprising 8-12 sessions. At its peak, Orobind was serving over 1,000 customers in Bengaluru with a network of around 135 active trainers.
After facing initial struggles, including being rejected by over 50 angel investors, Orobind secured seed funding in June 2014 and subsequent angel funding from notable investors. The company experienced significant growth, and in February 2016, it was acquired by the Amazon-backed home services provider Housejoy in an all-stock deal for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was part of Housejoy's strategy to strengthen its position in the wellness category, a lucrative market due to high repeat rates. As part of the deal, the entire Orobind team, including its co-founders, trainers, and customer base, transitioned to Housejoy, with Vyas becoming the head of the fitness vertical and Srivastava the chief architect of the technology program.
