Orgoo was a Los Angeles-based startup that emerged from the entrepreneurial environment of the University of Southern California, founded by students Sean Rad and Shahzad Tiwana. The venture was born out of Rad's frustration with managing multiple communication accounts, envisioning a unified platform to streamline digital interactions. Orgoo garnered attention after its launch at the TechCrunch 40 conference in 2007, securing angel investment to support its growth.
The company's core offering was a web-based service that aggregated a user's various email and instant messaging accounts, including MSN Messenger, Yahoo, GTalk, and AIM, into a single interface with one login. The platform was developed with Ajax and allowed users to access their email via POP3 and IMAP. Notable features included the ability to organize both emails and chat logs with drag-and-drop functionality into a nested folder system, create on-the-fly chat rooms, and send 30-second video messages. Orgoo provided users with 3GB of free storage.
Initially targeting consumers, Orgoo aimed to solve the inconvenience of switching between different communication platforms. The company operated with a small, international team, with three employees in California and eight in Pakistan. Despite initial acclaim and accumulating one million sign-ups within the first three months, the service struggled with speed compared to established players like Gmail and Yahoo. Orgoo later attempted to pivot from a consumer focus to a B2B product before ultimately ceasing operations. Following Orgoo's closure, co-founder Sean Rad achieved significant success as a co-founder of the dating app Tinder in 2012.
