OpenSpirit

OpenSpirit is a software framework that enables data and application interoperability from multiple vendors, specifically for the upstream oil and gas industry. The platform is designed to break down technology barriers, allowing different applications to work directly with data from competing data stores and across various computing platforms. Its core function is to facilitate improved workflows and analysis in the geotechnical space by allowing applications to cooperate as if they were from a single vendor.

Originally a privately-held company, OpenSpirit Corporation was founded on July 1, 2000. In September 2010, TIBCO Software acquired OpenSpirit, which at the time served over 200 clients in 57 countries. Following the acquisition, the company became known as TIBCO OpenSpirit, with former CEO Dan Piette joining TIBCO to lead the business unit. Prior to its acquisition, OpenSpirit had received venture capital funding from investors including Chevron Technology Ventures, Kenda Capital, and Paradigm Electronics.

The OpenSpirit suite, now part of the TIBCO portfolio, operates through a runtime environment installed on user computers and data-hosting servers. Key components include data connectors, which publish data stores to the runtime, and application adapters, which connect software to the framework. This allows for the integration of diverse E&P data such as well logs, seismic data, and geological models. The platform supports major industry software like Schlumberger's Petrel and Esri's ArcGIS, offering extensions and plug-ins that enable features like spatial data extraction and bidirectional data exchange. The business model involves licensing OpenSpirit data connectors based on data store type and per concurrent user.
