On Second Thought (OST) provides patented technology that allows users to delay, recall, and edit messages. The company was co-founded in 2014 by CEO Maci Peterson, Stewart Voit, and Gary Keeler. The idea originated from Peterson's personal experience with an embarrassing auto-corrected text message. Before founding OST, Peterson worked as a brand manager at Marriott International and a marketing strategist for The Root, holding a degree in Public Relations and Advertising from Chapman University.
The company's initial product was a messaging app for Android and later iOS that replaced the phone's default SMS app. It allowed users to set a grace period of up to 60 seconds to swipe and either delete or edit a sent message before it reached the recipient's device. A notable feature was the "Curfew" mode, which would hold all messages sent during a set time until the next morning for review. The development journey included a complete rebuild of the app's code after the initial version, built by an overseas team, was found to be unusable.
Recognizing the broader potential of its technology, On Second Thought shifted its business model from a direct-to-consumer app to licensing its patented delay/recall software system as an API for integration into other mobile and desktop platforms. The company's goal is to make the "undo" functionality a universal standard in digital communication environments.
