Odyssey Re is a global underwriter of property and casualty treaty and facultative reinsurance, as well as specialty insurance. Headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, the company operates through a worldwide network of 13 branch and representative offices. It is the reinsurance division of the Odyssey Group, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, a Canadian financial services holding company.
The company's history traces back to the establishment of Skandia America in 1996, which was acquired by Fairfax Financial and renamed Odyssey Reinsurance Corporation. A significant milestone occurred in 2001 when Odyssey Re Holdings Corp. was incorporated and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with Fairfax retaining a majority stake. By 2009, Fairfax moved to acquire the remaining shares, taking the company private. The parent holding company was rebranded from Odyssey Re Holdings to Odyssey Group Holdings in 2018 to align all its brands.
OdysseyRe provides a broad array of reinsurance products. Its offerings cover property, casualty, surety, credit, marine, energy, aviation, and space risks. The business model focuses on diversification across multiple products and geographies to maintain portfolio stability and manage the cyclical nature of the reinsurance market. Revenue is generated through premiums collected for underwriting these diverse risks. For the second quarter of 2025, Odyssey reported $1.7 billion in gross written premiums and achieved a combined ratio of 91.9%.
