NuxtLabs is the corporate entity behind Nuxt, an open-source framework designed to simplify the development of web applications using Vue.js. The company was founded by French brothers Sébastien and Alexandre Chopin, along with Pooya Parsa. Their journey into web development began in their youth in the Pyrenees mountains, where they taught themselves to code. The initial concept for Nuxt emerged in 2016 when the Chopin brothers decided to open-source the code they had developed for an e-commerce website, which utilized server-side rendering with Vue.js. This was inspired by the simplicity of Next.js for the React ecosystem, leading them to create a similar solution for Vue. The first commit was made on October 26, 2016, and the project quickly gained traction within the developer community.
The core of the business is the Nuxt framework, an MIT-licensed open-source project that enhances Vue.js by providing structure and simplifying complex configurations for features like server-side rendering, routing, and state management. It is built upon technologies like Vue.js for the frontend, Vite for the build tooling, and Nitro as its server engine. Nuxt serves a wide range of clients, from individual developers and startups to large enterprises, enabling them to build anything from static websites to complex, production-grade full-stack applications. The framework's key benefits include automatic route generation based on the file system, multiple rendering modes (server-side, static, and client-side), and a vast module ecosystem that extends its functionality.
Initially, the founders struggled to generate sustainable revenue while developing the open-source framework. This led to a strategy of commercializing products built around the Nuxt ecosystem. The company offers premium products such as Nuxt UI Pro, a component library, and Nuxt Studio, a content management system editor. They also provide professional support through Nuxt Experts. A significant milestone was a $2M seed funding round in 2020, which enabled the team to expand and work full-time on the project. In July 2025, NuxtLabs was acquired by Vercel, a move intended to provide stable funding and allow the team to focus entirely on open-source development. Following the acquisition, NuxtLabs announced that its paid products, like Nuxt UI Pro and a self-hostable version of Nuxt Studio, would become free and open-source.
