Numascale is a Norwegian company operating in the high-performance computing (HPC) and big data analytics market. The firm specializes in developing interconnect hardware and technology that enables system vendors to build large, scalable, shared-memory systems from standard servers. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional scale-out server clusters where each machine has a separate memory space, requiring complex messaging for communication. By creating a single system image with cache coherency across thousands of processor cores and terabytes of memory, Numascale's technology simplifies programming and debugging for developers. The company's core product is its NumaConnect technology, which utilizes a proprietary ASIC (NumaChip) to handle cache coherency logic. This hardware allows any processor in the system to directly access any data location, a model known as ccNuma (cache coherent Non-Uniform Memory Access). This architecture is processor-agnostic and provides significant total cost of ownership (TCO) advantages by optimizing server resource utilization and reducing the underutilization of expensive DRAM memory often seen in scale-out data centers. Numascale provides these technologies as turnkey systems, combining their hardware with optimized open-source software for the big data analytics market, and also licenses its extensive portfolio of intellectual property (IP) blocks. The leadership includes CEO Morten Toverud, who brought extensive industry experience from roles such as VP of R&D at Rheinmetall Defence and as a Senior Principal Scientist at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment. Co-founder Einar Rustad has a background as a CPU architect and has specialized in high-performance cluster solutions for over 16 years.
