In 1984, a company named Rocking Horse Child Care Centers of America, Inc. was founded in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, starting with a single child-care center. This was the beginning of what would become Nobel Learning Communities. A key figure in the company's trajectory was A.J. Clegg, who was appointed chairman and CEO in 1992. A year later, he began a strategic shift, converting the child-care centers into curriculum-based preschools and renaming the company to Nobel Education Dynamics, Inc. The business expanded by acquiring and developing preschools, elementary, and middle schools, often clustering them to create community-based educational networks. By 1998, the company had been renamed Nobel Learning Communities, Inc. The following year, it diversified further by acquiring specialty high schools and launching tutorial programs. A significant event in the company's journey occurred in 2011 when it was taken private through an acquisition by Leeds Equity Partners in a deal valued at approximately $149 million. This was followed by another major acquisition in 2015, when Investcorp bought Nobel Learning. Finally, in 2018, Nobel Learning was acquired by Spring Education Group, a portfolio company of the Asia-based investment firm Primavera Capital Group, becoming part of a larger network of private schools.
