NimbleTV, Inc. was a technology company that developed a cloud-based television platform, allowing users to watch and record their pay-TV subscriptions from any location on various internet-connected devices. Founded in 2010 by Anand Subramanian, Paul George, David C Peterson, and Marcos Trinidad, the New York-based firm sought to untether subscribers from their physical cable boxes. CEO Anand Subramanian, an IIT Bombay graduate and serial entrepreneur, previously founded a medical software firm in India and later, the successful online ad company ContextWeb in the U.S. His experience in technology and digital media informed NimbleTV's approach to work within the existing TV ecosystem rather than against it.
The company's core business was providing a hardware-free, cloud-based solution that functioned as a remote access service for a user's existing cable subscription. This model was designed to be industry-friendly, ensuring that content providers and distributors were still compensated. NimbleTV's revenue came from a monthly service fee added on top of the customer's regular cable bill, which covered features like subscription management and cloud DVR storage. The platform offered several packages, including a "New York Add-On" for existing subscribers of services like Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS, and a "New York Concierge" service that would set up a new cable subscription on the user's behalf. It also offered a package for viewing Indian channels globally.
The service featured a cloud-based HD-DVR with scalable recording space, from 20 to over 90 hours, and allowed users to stream both live and recorded content. The platform was accessible via web browsers and dedicated apps for iOS, Android, Roku, and Apple TV. After launching its beta in 2012 and officially in New York City in December 2013, the company garnered financial backing from investors including Greycroft Partners, Tribeca Venture Partners, and the Tribune Company. However, in January 2015, NimbleTV suspended its service to focus on developing a new product. Shortly after, it was announced that the company and its technology were being acquired by Synacor, Inc., a provider of technology for the pay-TV industry, marking the end of NimbleTV as a standalone consumer service.
