NIC.br
Created to implement the decisions and projects of the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil.
The Brazilian Network Information Center, known as NIC.br, functions as the operational arm of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), a multistakeholder organization responsible for establishing strategic directives for internet development in Brazil. Established as a non-profit civil entity in 2005, NIC.br was created to implement the projects and decisions of CGI.br. The organization's genesis traces back to the pioneering efforts of the Brazilian academic and research community in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A key figure in this history is Demi Getschko, considered one of the pioneers of the internet in Brazil, who was involved in the country's first TCP/IP connection in 1991 and the initial delegation of the .br domain in 1989. Getschko currently serves as the CEO of NIC.br.
NIC.br's core business revolves around ensuring the stability, security, and evolution of Brazil's internet infrastructure. Its revenue is primarily generated through its department, Registro.br, which is responsible for the registration and maintenance of all domain names under the ".br" country code top-level domain (ccTLD). This self-sustaining financial model, where fees from domain registration are reinvested into the internet ecosystem, supports all of NIC.br's other activities without public funding. The client base for this service spans individuals, academic institutions, private companies, and public sector entities that require a digital presence in Brazil.
Beyond domain registration, NIC.br provides a suite of essential services to the Brazilian internet community. Through its various departments, it manages the allocation and distribution of IP addresses (IPv4 and IPv6) and Autonomous System Numbers (ASN). Its Computer Emergency Response Team, CERT.br, is the central hub for handling security incidents, offering coordination and support for networks connected to the Brazilian internet. Another crucial department, CEPTRO.br, focuses on improving network infrastructure through projects like IX.br (formerly PTT.br), which establishes Internet Exchange Points to facilitate efficient local traffic exchange. Furthermore, CETIC.br is tasked with producing vital statistics and strategic information on internet development and usage in Brazil, conducting research on technology adoption across various sectors. NIC.br also hosts the Brazilian chapter of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), promoting web standards in the country.
