In 2006, the world of online advertising was still heavily reliant on keywords. Two innovators, Behnam Rezaei and Vwani Roychowdhury, saw a different path forward. Rezaei, a researcher with expertise in complex systems, and Roychowdhury, a UCLA professor, envisioned a smarter way to connect ads with content. They founded Netseer to move beyond simple keyword matching and understand the underlying concepts on a webpage. The company developed what it called a 'ConceptGraph,' a patented engine designed to analyze the true meaning and intent of web content. This allowed Netseer to place more relevant ads, creating better results for advertisers and higher value for publishers, even on content that lacked high-value keywords. The playbook was to build a more nuanced picture of a user's mindset, allowing their algorithms to function more like a human and less like a machine. This approach attracted investors. Over two rounds, Netseer raised a total of $14.4 million from backers including ONSET Ventures and Mission Ventures. The company continued to build out its technology, focusing on visual monetization solutions and programmatic ad buying. A significant chapter in Netseer's journey came in February 2017 when it was acquired by Inuvo, an advertising technology and digital publishing company. Inuvo purchased substantially all of Netseer's assets, integrating its ConceptGraph and in-image advertising technology to strengthen its own product suite. The move marked the end of Netseer's independent run but validated its core thesis: understanding the concept, not just the keyword, was the future.
