The story begins in 1986, when Farallon Computing was founded in Berkeley, California. Initially focused on creating networking products for Macintosh computers, the company developed notable technologies like PhoneNet, which allowed AppleTalk networking over regular telephone wires. One of its early successes was the MacRecorder, the first audio capture device for the Mac, which was later sold to Macromedia. As the internet landscape evolved, Farallon Computing shifted its focus. In 1998, the company rebranded as Netopia, Inc. and pivoted to producing DSL modems, routers, and gateways for the growing broadband market. This strategic change positioned Netopia as a key supplier of broadband equipment and software for telecommunications operators. The company's journey reached a significant milestone in late 2006 when Motorola announced its intention to acquire Netopia. The deal, valued at approximately $208 million, was finalized in February 2007. Netopia was integrated into Motorola's Connected Home Solutions business, combining its expertise in telecom equipment with Motorola's global reach, particularly in the emerging IPTV sector.
